Cinque Terre (translation: the five lands) is one of the most stunning places in Italy. Located on the western coast of Italy, these five villages, the coastline, and the surrounding hillsides are a UNESCO World Heritage Site and part of the Cinque Terre National Park. From looking at these pictures, you’ll see why this beautiful area attracts many tourists each year. Maybe the charm of Cinque Terre will even inspire you to apply to live in Europe for free.

1. You get to see five different villages, all uniquely beautiful in their own way.

The five villages are: Monterosso al Mare, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola, and Riomaggiore.

2. It’s a peaceful escape from the outside world.

You can reach each of the villages by paths, train, or boat; part of the seclusive charm of Cinque Terre is the fact that cars can’t reach these cities from the outside.

3. Appreciate the creativity and ingenuity of the people who live there.

People have built terraces on the steep, surrounding landscapes allowing farmers to cultivate grapes, olives, and other produce.

4. The pesto is to die for!

Cinque Terre, as well as the whole area of Liguria, is known for its pesto. We’ve tried it and you can trust us, there’s a reason why even local Italians agree that it’s unbeatable.

5. You can donate to maintain the beauty.

In October of 2011, the villages of Cinque Terre were unfortunately damaged by rains which caused serious flooding and mudslides. Sadly, nine people were confirmed killed in this incident and there was extensive damage to the villages. Now, by paying a fee to hike the trail, you donate to a fund which maintains the trail and helps prevent future flood damage.

6. Try the gelato and the wines.

According to Wikipedia, the grapes of Cinque Terre are used to produce two locally made wines. “The eponymous Cinque Terre and Sciachetrà are both made using Bosco, Albarola, and Vermentino grapes.”

The gelato is also delicious! Especially if you decide to hike between the cities, a scoop or two of your favorite flavor can really hit the spot.

7. Enjoy the colors of the cities.

Cinque Terre is famous for its beautifully colored buildings and with the contrast of the sea and the rolling hills, they really are a sight to remember.

8. The flowers are gorgeous.

Beautiful flowers dot the landscape and the trails between the villages, giving a gorgeous vista for anyone walking along the path.

That’s a wrap for us on Cinque Terre! Of course, there are far more than 8 reasons to visit this gorgeous region. But if we wrote down everything, this would take an hour to read! Plus, it’s nice to leave a little magic to the discovery, no?

That being said, hope you enjoyed. If you’ve been to the Five Lands, what was your favorite part? We’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments!
